The study project of the Xishang Pavillon in the Qijanlong Garden of the Forbidden City in Beijing, China, carried out for the World Monuments Fund and the Palace Museum in Beijing, involved the preliminary study of the pavilion's external marble balustrade. The project involved two phases of implementation. The first took place in situ and consisted of collecting data regarding the state of conservation of the balustrade reliefs and their mapping. Cleaning and consolidation tests area were performed on some parts of the balustrade to provide guidance on the intervention methodology to follow for a possible restoration of the entire balustrade. The second phase took place in Italy and involved drafting the final project by analysing the collected data, diagnosing the existing alteration forms, and developing a methodology for a complete restoration project.
